It was only my fifth night in Aoraki / Mount Cook (New Zealand) in August 2024. I had returned from my gruelling hike up to Muellers’ hut the previous day and was taking it easy so my body could recover.
It was about 10pm and I decided to set my camera up to take a timelapse star spiral over a period of several hrs. Having attached my lens warmer and having inserted a fresh battery I pointed my camera at the Southern Polaris and after a couple of test shots was ready to start the shoot and retire to my camper van until the early hrs, tucked up under two duvets and clothed in thermals and a fleece. It was below Zero already and forecast to get to below -6 deg.
I had noticed during my test shots a red glow above the mountain ridge but dismissed it as light pollution from the village on the other side of the hill. At about 3.30am I climbed down from my camper van and, bleary eyed went outside to retrieve my camera.
The camera was frosted up, including the lens but this was because the battery had run out as expected. I went inside and started to go through the images. The camera has the ability to speed through the images during review of them and to my amazement I had captured a full Aurora Australis.
I was simply stunned and of course over the moon. Not only would I be able to stitch together all the images to make a star spiral image but the light from the Aurora would make a beautiful backdrop to the image. To say I was emotional was an understatement.
These are moments we as photographers live for. It took me a little while to go back to sleep after that...
