THE STORY

For a long time, I had wanted to capture a crocodile in this way. While photographing for a client in Far North Queensland, I had the opportunity to spend time with this magnificent animal and wait for the moment I had imagined.

At approximately five metres away, I captured this photograph.

What struck me was not simply the power of the animal, but the extraordinary detail within its eye and surrounding skin. It is this contrast — beauty within something so formidable — that gave the work its name.

Beauty in the Beast.

ABOUT THE ESTUARINE CROCODILE

  • The world's largest living reptile. Male estuarine crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) can exceed 5 metres in length, with exceptional individuals growing beyond 6 metres.
  • An ancient predator. Crocodilians belong to an evolutionary lineage stretching back more than 200 million years, although modern crocodile species evolved much more recently.
  • Remarkable eyes. Their eyes are highly adapted for hunting in low light, with a reflective layer behind the retina that improves night vision.
  • Built for ambush. With their eyes, ears and nostrils positioned on top of the head, crocodiles can remain almost completely submerged while watching and sensing their surroundings.
  • A Far North Queensland icon. Estuarine crocodiles inhabit rivers, estuaries, wetlands and coastal waters throughout tropical northern Australia.

Beauty in the Beast invites you to see this extraordinary animal from a perspective few people will ever experience.
