Introducing "FROZEN" a limited edition fine art print from the Cairns Crystalbrook Bailey Featured Artist Exhibition "HONEST" held in November 2024.
I had started hiking early in the morning to get up to Mueller’s Hut, in Aoraki Mt Cook National Park in New Zealand. Estimated hike time is 5 hrs and I’m assuming this is with no snow and with fair weather. Regardless I had done my research and had planned this hike for 9 months, timed with a new moon and hopefully clear skies (at some point).
This capture was taken after about 7 hrs of leisurely paced but gruelling hiking. At this stage crampons attached and pick axe in hand with fresh and compressed snow in places at waist height.
Drawn to the drifting snow over the rocks and boulders and with a view of the valley below I stopped to eat a pre made French stick and some cherry tomatoes. Directly behind me was a very steep 200m climb up the mountain before it levelled out and continued at a more gentle incline to Mueller's Hut, a further 90 minutes away.
This is what photography and mountaineering is all about. Feeling the crisp air being pulled in through the nose and feeling it pass down the throat. The freezing fingers after one minute out of gloves. The fatigue yet adrenaline as one looks around in wonder at ones surroundings.
The pure blue of the skies.
And the peace. Oh my, the peace.
